Earth Day Art Contest

Earth Day 2017 Calendar Art Contest

The Hudson County Improvement Authority is inviting all students to commemorate 27 Years of Earth Day celebrations in Hudson County by competing in the 2017 Earth Day Calendar Art Contest. Any student from Kindergarten through the 8th Grade is eligible.

Four pieces of artwork will be selected from each of the following grade:

  • 1.Kindergarten through Grade 2
  • 2.Grade 3 through Grade 5
  • 3.Grade 6 through Grade 8

After the winners are chosen, a 12 month calendar will be printed featuring those posters that best depict this year’s theme: “Trees for the Earth” or #Trees4Earth”. Calendars will be distributed to all Hudson County Elementary and Middle Schools in December.

With the 50th anniversary of Earth Day fast approaching in 2020, the Earth Day Network has launched a series of major campaigns to catalyze and channel global collaboration for the health of our planet. Trees for the Earth was the first of these campaigns. Its goal is to plant 7.8 billion trees worldwide by 2020 – one for every person projected to be on Earth.

We would like our students to think about the ways that they can be an environmental leader and help their families, friends, neighbors and schools to understand the amazing ways that trees help our environment.

Students can search the internet for the types of trees and plants that are native to this area of the state and how they play a role in protecting “Our Hudson Home.” Some examples: Trees create an ecosystem to provide habitat and food for birds and other animals. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses, such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, from the air and release oxygen. One large tree can supply a day's supply of oxygen for four people.

All artwork must be original and signed by the artist. Posters may be created in marker, crayon, watercolor, ink, acrylic, or tempera paint. The brightest colors make for the best posters!! No computer generated art or glued collages are allowed. All artwork must be in landscape format -- 11”H x 14”W. The theme, “Trees for the Earth” or “#Trees4Earth” must be on the poster, spelled correctly and easy to read.

The winners of the Earth Day Calendar Art Contest will be honored and presented their awards at a special ceremony in the “Awards Tent” at 1:00 PM during the HCIA’s Earth Day 2017 Fair on Saturday, April 22rd in Liberty State Park, Jersey City. All winning entries will on display during the Fair (weather permitting).

The top four works of art chosen from each grade level will receive a $50.00 Gift Certificate. In addition, four pieces of art in each grade level will be awarded “Second Place” and another four posters in each grade level will be awarded “Third Place”. All Second and Third Place winners will receive a $25.00 Gift Certificate and have their artwork displayed on the HCIA website and in the calendar.

Earth Day begins at 10 AM with the annual 5K Run/Walk. From 11 AM to 4 PM, we will sponsor environmental displays, live entertainment, inflatable rides, games, contests, face painting, and food.

All entries into the Calendar Contest will be picked up by HCIA Staff on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 unless we are instructed otherwise. Winners will be notified by e-mail on Monday, April 3, 2017. Please fax or e-mail the enclosed application by Wednesday, March 15, 2017 to advise us that your school will be participating.
